World number one Simona Halep on Sunday claimed her first grand slam title by thrashing Sloane Stephens (3-6 6-4 6-1) of America in the French Open final.
Though Halep lost the first set and a break down at the Roland Garros, she bounced back into the game by winning the remaining two sets.

Halep had lost her three previous major finals and on Sunday she made a gutsy comeback against American 10th seed Sloane Stephens.

Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus defeated American Sloane Stephens 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals of the San Diego Open here on Thursday.
Halep was set to face Veronika Kudermetova in the second round. Kudermetova received a walkover into the Round of 16 and will face either Paula Badosa or Ajla Tomljanovic.
Halep, who has won two Grand Slam titles -- French Open 2018 and Wimbledon 2019, was placed No.27 till the week of February 28.
