Ousmane Dembele’s participation at the 2018 FIFA World Cup is in doubt after the 21-year-old Frenchman was injured during Barcelona’s final La Liga game of the season.

“The first team player Ousmane Dembele has a sprained right ankle. In the next few days he will continue under the supervision of the Club’s medical staff,” a club statement read.

Dembele, Barcelona’s record signing, was the recipient of a poor challenge from Real Sociedad defender Raul Navas during La Blaugrana’s 1-0 win on Sunday.

While the incident took place towards the end of the first-half, Dembele actually managed to hang on till half time and even got on to the pitch for the restart, but eventually had to be taken off in the 54th-minute mark.

Usually a sprained ankle requires 2-3 weeks of rest, which would suggest that the former Borussia Dortmund man should be fit for Les Bleus‘ opener, which takes place on June 16.

With the club season over for La Blaugrana, Demeble’s sole aim will be now to get fit for the quadrennial extravaganza that is the World Cup.

So far, he has just nine caps for the senior side but is a confirmed starter for the European giants and France will be hoping his issue isn’t a major one.
