Spain rediscovered their attacking spark in emphatic fashion as teenage sensation Lamine Yamal inspired a dominant 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in their Group H FIFA World Cup 2026 clash, securing La Roja’s place in the knockout stage.
After being held to a frustrating goalless draw by Cabo Verde in their opening match, Spain looked far more dynamic in Atlanta, with Yamal providing creativity and Mikel Oyarzabal silencing his critics with a clinical brace.

The 18-year-old Barcelona star made an immediate impact, delighting the crowd with a dazzling dribble and dangerous delivery in the opening minutes. Spain’s early pressure paid off in the 10th minute when Dani Olmo’s inviting cross found Yamal, who slid in to score his first goal of the tournament.
The breakthrough settled Spain’s nerves and allowed Luis de la Fuente’s side to take complete control of the contest. Their second goal arrived in the 30th minute from a corner, with Aymeric Laporte’s header creating chaos inside the box before Oyarzabal reacted quickest to bundle the ball home.
Just three minutes later, Spain produced the move of the match. A superb lofted pass over the Saudi defence found Marc Cucurella, who volleyed the ball across the six-yard area without letting it touch the ground. Dani Olmo then headed it into Oyarzabal’s path, and the striker finished brilliantly to make it 3-0.
The goal was a welcome moment for Oyarzabal, who had struggled to make an impact in Spain’s tournament opener against Cabo Verde.
Spain effectively ended the contest shortly after the break. Olmo again played a key role, volleying a corner towards goal. Although the effort was initially saved, the rebound struck Saudi defender Hassan Altambakti and rolled into the net for an unfortunate own goal that extended Spain’s lead to four.
With the result beyond doubt, De la Fuente opted to protect key players, withdrawing Yamal and Oyarzabal as Spain comfortably controlled possession and managed the tempo for the remainder of the match.
The victory lifts Spain to four points from two matches and guarantees their place in the knockout rounds. Saudi Arabia remain on one point and face a must-win final group game to keep their qualification hopes alive.
Spain will now turn their attention to finishing top of Group H, while Saudi Arabia’s fate hangs in the balance heading into the final round of fixtures.
