England sealed their place in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a convincing 24-run victory over Italy in Match 29 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Monday.

Phil Salt (28 off 15) provided a rapid start, while Jacob Bethell (23 off 20) and Tom Banton (30 off 21) kept the scoreboard ticking. Jos Buttler struggled again, managing just three runs, while Sam Curran added valuable late runs with a 25-run cameo.
The standout performance came from Will Jacks, who smashed an unbeaten 53 off just 22 balls to propel England past the 200-run mark. The aggressive knock, laced with boundaries and sixes, gave England the late-innings surge they needed.
Jacks also registered the fastest fifty for England in T20 World Cup history, reaching the milestone in just 21 balls to break the previous record jointly held by Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler (25 balls). His unbeaten 53 is also the highest score by an England No. 7 batter in T20 World Cup history and marked his maiden T20I half-century, underlining his growing impact in the format.
For Italy, Grant Stewart and Crishan Kalugamage picked up two wickets each, while JJ Smuts, Ali Hasan and Ben Manenti chipped in with a wicket apiece.
Will Jacks was named Player of the Match for his explosive innings.
Chasing a daunting 203-run target, Italy suffered an early collapse as Jofra Archer struck twice in the first over, dismissing Anthony Mosca and JJ Smuts for ducks.
Captain Harry Manenti made 12 off 11 before falling, but Italy staged an impressive recovery through Ben Manenti (60 off 25) and Justin Mosca (43 off 32), who added 92 runs for the fourth wicket.
Grant Stewart’s quickfire 45 off 23 balls kept Italy in contention, but England’s bowlers executed their plans brilliantly at the death to restrict the Italians to 178/8 in 20 overs, sealing a 24-run win.
Despite the defeat, Italy created history with several milestones. Their 178 in the chase was the highest total they have ever recorded while batting second in a T20 International and also marked the first time they crossed the 175-run mark against a Full Member nation. Ben Manenti also etched his name into the record books, becoming the first Italian batter to score a T20 World Cup fifty against a Full Member side, smashing a rapid 60 off 25 balls in a valiant effort.
With this victory, England confirmed their place in the Super 8 stage, joining West Indies, India and South Africa among the early qualifiers. Italy will play their final group-stage match against the West Indies on Thursday at the same venue.
