Following the requests from Barcelona and Real Madrid, the revised date for El Clasico has been confirmed by the Competition Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The match will now be played on 18 December.

Bitter rivals Barca and Madrid reached a quick consensus on a potential new date for the fixture after civil unrest in Catalonia forced their first encounter of the 2019-20 La Liga season, which was originally set to take place on 26 October, to be postponed.

“The decision of the Competition Committee has come after analyzing in recent days the proposals of both clubs, which were invited to agree on a date and who agreed to signal on December 18 for the celebration of the postponed match,” an RFEF statement read which was released on Wednesday after the meeting.

Though both clubs agreed on 18 December (a weekday; Wednesday) for the clash, La Liga have confirmed that they will appeal for a new date and they hope their proposal gets accepted in a bid to showcase the biggest match in the competition to a wider audience.

“La Liga does not share the resolution of the competition committee to settle on December 18 – following the agreement reached by FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, but La Liga’s refusal – as the new date of the previously postponed Clasico,” a statement from La Liga read.
