Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone credited his excellent bond with his players as the reason behind their triumph in the 2018 UEFA Europa League final in Lyon on Wednesday night.

“We’re very happy. We’ve been working very well these past years,” Simeone gushed to the media after the 3-0 win over Olympique de Marseille.

The Rojiblancos were favourites to lift their second Europa League title under the Argentine tactician and star man Antoine Griezmann’s 21st-minute strike ensured they went into the interval with their lead intact.

“We’ve always said the best way to get back to winning ways is by persisting.”

“The coaching staff have been lucky enough to find very strong men and footballers who have been improving year after year,” Simeone stated as he showered praise on the backroom staff.

“I have a great communion with my players and I can be at home or in the hotel but they will still play the same way,” the 48-year-old manager added.

Simeone has been suspended on a number of occasions over the years and been forced to watch from the stands, so was obviously referring to those infamous incidents.

His future has been the subject of intense speculation of late, with many linking him to the vacant job at Arsenal and while now would be the perfect time to end his tenure with Atletico, it looks like Simeone is happy in the Spanish capital.
