The move comes after Bangladesh chose to withdraw from the event, citing security concerns and claiming that their issues were not adequately addressed by the global governing body.

“It was only a matter of time before Bangladesh was replaced by the Associate country from the northwestern European country in the British isles and the final call was taken on Saturday morning when it is learnt that the ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta formally wrote to the ICC Board that the demands of Bangladesh were not in order with the ICC policy,” reported Cricbuzz.
According to Cricbuzz, the decision was finalised during a high-level ICC meeting held in Dubai, convened by ICC Chairman Jay Shah to determine Bangladesh’s participation. In a last-ditch attempt, the BCB had requested the matter be referred to the ICC’s Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC). However, the committee clarified that it does not function as an appellate authority and upheld the ICC’s final call.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is yet to release a statement regarding the replacement of Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup.
Scotland was named as Bangladesh’s replacement based on ICC rankings and will now feature in Group C alongside England, West Indies, Italy and Nepal. The European nation has previously played in six of the nine editions of the Men’s T20 World Cup (2007, 2009, 2016, 2021, 2022, and 2024).
Scotland will begin their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against the West Indies on February 7 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. They will face Italy on February 9 at the same venue, followed by a clash against England on February 14, and wrap up their group-stage fixtures against Nepal in Mumbai on February 17.
The development marks a significant shift in the tournament lineup, bringing an abrupt end to Bangladesh’s participation in the 2026 edition.
