Uruguay 1930 – France 4 Mexico 1

In the opening game of the first ever World Cup, France defeated Mexico in an exciting contest. The French proved to be too good for the Mexicans as they ran out 4-1 winners.

In the final, Uruguay beat Argentina 4-2 in a thrilling game.

Italy 1934 – Italy 7 USA 1 

Italy won handsomely, defeating the USA 7–1 in the inaugural game of the 1934 edition. Italy won the tournament beating Czechoslovakia 2-1 in the final.

Brazil 1950 – Brazil 4 Mexico 0

The hosts Brazil absolutely dismantled the Mexicans in the opener, scoring as many as four goals, which included two goals for tournament top-scorer Ademir.

Brazil lost the final to Uruguay, though.

Germany 2006 – Germany 4 Costa Rica 2

The 2006 FIFA World Cup kicked off with hosts Germany taking on Costa Rica. It was a high scoring game that produced six goals. A brace from Miroslav Klose helped Germany avoid a scare in the opening game.

Italy beat France in penalties to win their fourth World Cup title.

Russia 2018 – Russia 5 Saudi Arabia 0

Last night, the 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off in some style, with Russia hammering Saudi Arabia in a one-sided game. Denis Cheryshev scored two, and a goal apiece from Yury Gazinsky, Dzyuba and Golovin gave the tournament a rollicking start.
