Karwa Chauth is a one-day Hindu festival celebrated when Hindu married women observe a ‘nirjala’ fast and don’t consume water or food. The festival is celebrated all over the country, especially in Northern India. The married women fast from sunrise to moonrise (when the moon is sighted) for the safety and long life of their husbands.
The women eats ‘sargi’ or a pre-dawn meal before sunrise which is given to her by her in-laws and wears bridal ensemble. After eating ‘sargi’ at around 4 AM, they do not consume anything including water during the day and eat only after seeing the moon in the evening. On this day, married women worship Lord Shiva, his consort Parvati and Lord Ganesha. They also listen to a Karwa Chauth mythological tale and break the fast only after sighting and making offerings to the moon.
This year, the Karwa Chauth is on October 17.
