A day after breaking his silence on the racial killinging of a 24-year old MBA student from Tripura in Dehradun, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami assured the father of the deceased that the culprits would be dealt with a heavy hand.

Dhami called the victim’s father, Tarun Prasad Chakma, on mobile and expressed his grief over the killing of his son Anjel Chakma, stating that his government will lend all possible help to the family.

Talking to Anjel’s father, the chief minister said, “Personally, I am in pain from this incident and understand the family’s grief. The Uttarakhand government will ensure harshest punishment for the culprits. This incident is painful for everyone as the state never had an atmosphere like this before despite thousands of children from across the country and abroad studying here.”

Dhami further mentioned that he had also spoken with Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, as well as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. He stressed that the state government stands firmly behind the victim’s family. “I will also coordinate with the chief minister of Tripura to assist the family and the Uttarakhand government would provide every possible support to them,” he added.

Angel Chakma, a MBA student, studying at a local private management institute in Dehradun, was killed by six youths on December 9 as he requested them not to hurl abusive racial slurs on him and his brother Machel Chakma. The incident took place when Anjel and Machel had gone shopping at the nearby Selaqui area suburb market. The victim was immediately rushed to a Graphic Era Hospital but doctors could not save him. Angel died on December 25.
