Uttarakhand: Char Dham Yatra suspended amid heavy rains, landslides

The Char Dham Yatra was suspended for two days (Tuesday and Wednesday) due to landslides blocking the routes at multiple locations and a heavy rainfall alert in Uttarakhand.

Officials at the Commissioner of Garhwal Division said that the pilgrimage will resume once weather conditions improve, IANS reported.

With incessant monsoon showers continuing to batter multiple regions in Uttarakhand, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts. The state administration has stepped up precautionary measures and urged residents as well as pilgrims to remain vigilant.

With heavy rainfall expected in the region, the administration has appealed to people to stay away from rivers and streams, avoid non-essential travel, and exercise extreme caution while moving through hilly regions, since the possibility of landslides remains high.

Further, local residents and tourists have been advised to strictly follow weather advisories and instructions issued by the Meteorological Department as well as district administrations.

Notably, all schools and Anganwadi centres in affected areas remained closed on Tuesday.

The weather department has predicted heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri and Pauri Garhwal districts.
