Several houses and families were reportedly trapped under debris in Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts of Uttarakhand on Friday following two big cloudbursts in the region.

Several houses and families were reportedly trapped under debris in Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts of Uttarakhand on Friday following two big cloudbursts in the region.

This was confirmed by Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami who prayed for the safety of the safety of the victims. Chief minister said rescue operation was launched by the local police, District Disaster Management Authority while State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams were on the way to launch Search and Rescue operation at disaster hit areas.

“A tragic report about several families being trapped under debris brought down by a cloudburst in the Badeth Dungar Toak area of Basukedar Tehsil in Rudraprayag district and the Dewal block of Chamoli district. Relief and rescue operations by the local administration are underway on a war footing. I am in constant touch with officials and have spoken to the State Disaster Management Secretary and District Magistrates of the two districts for the effective management of the rescue works. I pray from Baba Kedar for the safety of all” said chief minister in his social media post on X.

District officials informed that preliminary information gathers from the tragedy hit locations have that more than two people were reportedly missing from Basukedar area of Rudraprayag. However officials confided in that missing figures may be much more than this once search operation is taken up in a big way.

Apart from Rudraprayag Mepta village area at Dewal block of Chamoli district bordering Kumaon was also hit by the cloudburst resulting into several houses trapped under debris and people missing from the village. It’s notable that this is second big cludburst in Chamoli as six days ago when Tharli block was hit by cloudburst reulting into two deaths and thick debris deposition in the several houses.

More that 60 people are still forced to stay in the relief camps of the distroct administration. News of cloudburst was reported from Tehri District as well.

Meanwhile Dehradun weather centre has sounded a red alert for the state capital till. According to the weather forecast heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning was expected across Dehradun. However western and northwest flank of the district ​Kalsi, ​Haripur, ​Dakpathar, ​Chakrata, ​Lakhwar and ​Vikasnagar have been warned of very intense to extremely intense rainfall.
