US Consul General interacts with industry heads in Coimbatore

United States Consul General in Kolkata, Cathy Giles-Diaz, held a meeting with Jharkhand Chief Secretary Alka Tiwari on Tuesday to explore investment and cooperation across critical sectors. The discussion marked a move towards strengthening subnational economic diplomacy, with the state seeking direct engagement with the United States on areas of mutual interest.
The meeting covered prospects in mining, higher education, health, environment, tourism, and agriculture. Officials underscored Jharkhand’s strategic position in the national energy transition framework and explored avenues for technical collaboration in sustainable development.

A K Rastogi, Chairman of the Task Force on Sustainable Just Transition, briefed the Consul General on Jharkhand’s forest cover and environmental policies. He noted the state accounts for over 33 per cent of India’s forested area and highlighted potential cooperation in carbon credit markets and forest-based economies.

Chief Secretary Tiwari presented Jharkhand’s natural resource base, skilled labour force, and government-led reforms aimed at expanding economic activities. She outlined opportunities in joint investment and skill development, especially in partnership with American institutions. She also discussed women-centric initiatives such as the Maiyan Samman Yojana, designed to reduce labour migration and enable economic participation.
The discussion extended to the possibility of academic tie-ups between American universities and institutions in Jharkhand, with a focus on research exchange and curriculum development. Tiwari highlighted the importance of global academic exposure in building local capacities.
Mines Secretary Rahul Kumar Sinha briefed the delegation on opportunities for joint ventures in coal and mineral extraction, including lithium, graphite, and titanium. He pointed to prospects in setting up mining equipment manufacturing units with American collaboration.
Agriculture, involving nearly 70 per cent of the state’s population, was identified as another key area for technology partnerships and investment. Officials cited potential in agri-processing, farm mechanisation, and rural infrastructure development.
Tourism also featured in the talks, with the state pitching its heritage, ecological, and religious sites for inbound investment and development partnerships.
The meeting concluded with a shared interest in identifying actionable areas for future cooperation. The US delegation included Consul General Cathy Giles-Diaz and her colleague Sangeeta De Chanda.
