Uttar Pradesh minister Dinesh Pratap Singh has expressed strong displeasure over the Income Tax Department’s raid at the residence of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Umashankar Singh in Ballia district, citing humanitarian concerns over the legislator’s critical health condition.
The minister’s remarks are significant as it is a rare instance of a ruling party leader publicly criticising action by a central agency against an Opposition politician.

In a post on X on Wednesday, Singh said Umashankar Singh, who represents Rasra Assembly constituency, is seriously ill and has been battling for his life for over two years. He also noted a personal connection, stating that his daughter is married into the MLA’s family.
Singh alleged that Income Tax officials carried out the raid despite the MLA’s fragile condition. He claimed that Umashankar Singh is currently confined to his residence, spending his time and financial resources on medical treatment, with most of his business activities shut down.
The minister further alleged that even medical staff, including doctors and nurses, were not allowed to enter during the raid. He warned that if any harm comes to the MLA, the concerned authorities would be held accountable.
Drawing a humanitarian comparison, Singh said courts often grant relief even in the “rarest of rare” cases and questioned the timing and manner of the action.
Yogi Adityanath-led government’s Minister of State for Horticulture, Singh had earlier contested the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat.
There was no immediate response from the Income Tax Department regarding the allegations.
