Electricity consumers on Uttar Pradesh are likely to face a burden soon as the power distribution companies have demanded average hike of power tariff by 15.85 per cent.

The proposed demand for domestic tariff hike is between 18 to 23 per cent, of the industry is 16 per cent and agriculture sector by 10 to 12 per cent.

On behalf of all the power companies of the state, the electricity rate proposal and the annual revenue requirement for the year 2023-24 have been filed on Monday before the UP State Electricity Regulatory Commission, officials here said.

The Annual Revenue Requirement (ARR)of all the power companies filed today is approximately Rs 92547 crore, while the distribution losses are 14.9 per cent and the gap for the year 2023-24 is Rs 9140 crore. The estimated total power purchase is approximately of Rs 134751.

On the other hand, Awadhesh Kumar Verma, President of Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Consumers Council and member of the State Advisory Committee, opposing this proposal, met the Chairman of the Electricity Regulatory Commission R P Singh and member Vinod Kumar Srivastava and filed a petition.

Verma said that the power companies have to pay Rs 25,133 crore to the consumers,  which was taken from them earlier.” When already the consumers owe such big amount from the power companies then why such hike in tariff,” he questioned.
