In a shocking twist in the murder of Tripura student Angel Chakma in Dehradun, the police on Monday claimed that there was no evidence to back his family’s allegations that the accused used racial slurs.

PD Bhatt, an investigator of the case, said, “We have found no evidence so far to link the incident with racism. There is no basis for such allegations.”

“An argument broke out between the two sides, which later escalated, resulting in the death of Chakma,” Bhatt said.

The police have arrested five people, including two minors, in connection with the murder case. A sixth accused, who is said to be a Nepali national, is absconding, and efforts are on to nab him.

“We are searching for him. Our teams are in Nepal. He will be arrested soon,” he said.

The investigators are yet to find who stabbed Chakma. During the interrogation, the accused told the police that it was the Nepali national who stabbed him.

However, it will only be clear after the arrest of the absconding accused.

Earlier, the family of Angel Chakma had alleged that the accused used racial slurs and called him ‘Chinki’, ‘Chinese’ and ‘Momo’.

Angel Chakma, a student from Nandanagar in Tripura’s Debram Thakur Para, was allegedly attacked with sharp weapons during a heated argument in Dehradun on December 9.

He sustained critical injuries and succumbed on 26 December while undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Meanwhile, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya Scindia said that he has spoken to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, urging him ensure fair and speedy investigation into the incident.

“The inhuman incident that happened with Angel Chakma and Michael of Tripura in Dehradun has deeply distressed and shocked me. This is not just a criminal incident but a deep blow to humanity and sensitivity,” Scindia said on X.

The minister also spoke to Tripura CM Manik Saha and assured him that the central government stands firmly with him.

“Such crimes against human dignity are a direct attack on the values of both our society and our Constitution, and cannot be accepted under any circumstances,” he added.
