TMC decides to confront govt on VB-G-Ram-G and SIR during Budget Session

On the one hand, there is the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list and on the other, the VB G-Ram-G project, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), along with other Opposition parties, wants to leverage both these issues during the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament.

The session will commence in the both houses of Parliament on Wednesday, January 28. The Union Budget will be presented on February 1. The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju has convened an all-party meeting on Tuesday as per the tradition a day ahead of the presentation of the Budget.

Representatives of the TMC, including Lok Sabha MP Shatabdi Roy and Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghosh, were present in the meeting. According to sources, the TMC aims to leverage the meticulous revision of the voter list and the deprivation of West Bengal in the Budget Session for the forthcoming assembly elections in the state.

In a similar manner, the Congress party convened a meeting under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi to devise a strategy for the session, targeting the VB G-Ram-G, which recently became law replacing the MGNREGA during the winter session of Parliament. The Congress leadership has already been vocal in opposing this legislation through nationwide protests. The G Ram-G is now in the Congress’s crosshairs for the upcoming Parliament session .

The budget session will commence with President Droupadi Murmu’s address to a joint session on January 28 and will continue until April 2. Traditionally, the budget session is divided into two phases. This year, the first phase will run from January 28 to February 13, followed by a break of nearly one month. The second phase will begin on March 9 and conclude on April 2. Uniquely this year, during the first phase of the budget session, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the central budget on Sunday, February 1.
