Panic prevails in the Neuria police station area here after a tiger critically injured a woman on Thursday morning.

This is the second tiger attack in the area this week. On Monday, a farmer, Dayaram of Phulhar village, was killed by the same tiger.

Around 6 AM on Thursday, the tiger attacked a woman, Meena (50), a resident of Sahajania village, while she was on her way to her farmland. The animal pounced on her and dragged her about 20 metres into a nearby sugarcane field.

Villagers rushed to the spot after Meena raised an alarm. She was critically injured and has been admitted to hospital in a critical condition.

Villagers also recorded a video of the tiger roaming through the fields and along the road. There is palpable anger among them over what they describe as the forest department’s indifference to the tiger’s continued presence in the area.

The villagers are demanding stronger security measures in light of the tiger’s increasing movement in the area. While forest department teams — supported by elephants — are trying to capture the animal, it continues to elude them.

According to reports, six people have lost their lives in tiger attacks in the district over the past two months. Three days ago, the tiger attacked and killed Dayaram, a resident of Phulhar village in the Neuria police station area. Earlier, a farmer from Mewatpur also died in a similar attack. Panic continues to grip the area as the tiger remains uncaptured and villagers stay confined to their homes out of fear.

The DFO of the Social Forest Division, Bharat Kumar DK, said that teams are actively working to trace the tiger.
