According to officials, the accused tried to flee from the spot when police opened fire in self-defence, injuring them in the leg.
The incident occurred in Vellakinaru, on the outskirts of Coimbatore.
Visuals from the hospital show the accused being treated for their injuries.
According to police, the incident occurred when the victim and her friend were attacked by three men who arrived in a vehicle.
The assailants allegedly assaulted the victim’s friend, kidnapped her, and later abandoned her after sexually assaulting her. The friend, who regained consciousness after the attack, alerted the authorities, leading to a rescue operation by the Peelamedu police.
Political leaders have condemned the incident and demanded stronger safety measures for women.
BJP Mahila Morcha National President Vanathi Srinivasan visited the crime site, criticising the police for calling the area “remote.” She said, “This is not a remote location; residential colonies are nearby, and people have easy access. Unfortunately, this spot has become a hub for anti-social activities. It is the responsibility of the police and local administration to ensure proper safety.”
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s General Secretary Aadhav Arjuna also expressed outrage, calling the incident “deeply shocking.” In a post on X, he wrote that the accused, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, attacked the student’s friend and abducted her. “This incident is further proof of the unsafe situation in Tamil Nadu, where women are unable to move freely in public spaces,” he said, urging authorities to take strict action against the perpetrators.
