The 8th titular Nizam of Hyderabad passed away on Saturday in Istanbul at the age of 89. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao announced a state funeral for Mukarram Jah after the family issued a statement informing that he would be buried at the Asaf Jahi family tombs according to his last wishes.

Mukarram Jah was born to Prince Azam Jah and Princess Durrushehvar in France in 1933. He was the grandson of the last Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan of the princely state and his mother was an Ottoman princess, the daughter of the last Caliph.

His father Azam Jah, the Prince of Berar, was passed over and Mukarram Jah was chosen by his grandfather as his heir and successor. His coronation took place on April 6, 1967. However, the last Nizam had signed the Instrument of Accession on 17 September 1948 and the State of Hyderabad was integrated into the Union of India. One of the richest men in the world, Jah spent most of his time in the Australian outback before settling in Turkey.

“We are deeply saddened to inform you that Nawab Mir Barkat Ali Khan Walashan Mukarram Jah Bahadur, HE.H The Eighth Nizam of Hyderabad, passed away peacefully in Istanbul, Turkey late last night at 10:30 pm,” read the statement issued by his office on behalf of his family.

His children will bring his mortal remains to Hyderabad and will be kept at Chowmahalla Palace before the burial which will take place at the Asaf Jahi tombs at Mecca Masjid near the Charminar.

“In recognition of Mukarram Jah’s social services as the successor of the Nizam in the fields of education and medicine for the poor, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao directed Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari to conduct Jah’s last rites with the highest state honours,” read a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO).
