Srinagar Deputy Mayor Sheikh Imran injured in assault during SMC meeting

Group rivalry in the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) took an ugly turn on Monday as Deputy Mayor Sheikh Imran sustained injuries after being assaulted by a councillor. The incident took place during a meeting of the general council of the SMC.

According to reports, there was a heated exchange of words during the session in the SMC Complex when one of the councilors threw some object at Imran, as a result of which he got injured and fell down, before being shifted to hospital for treatment

Sheikh Imran had become deputy mayor with support of the Congress, while Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu is backed by the BJP and Peoples Conference.

Interestingly, in his two tweets about Monday’s general council meeting, Mattu did not mention the alleged assault on Imran.

He tweeted: “After some initial disruptions, 3rd session of the General Council of SMC is underway and Questions as submitted by Corporators are being answered. 2/3rd Majority continues to be present in the Corporation Hall. Glad that the Congress Party has resumed its presence in the hall.”

In a subsequent tweet, Mattu posted: “The 3rd Session of the SMC General Council resumes after lunch break. Round 2nd of Question Hour Underway now. Quorum present. Constructive, positive work!”
