Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi Monday strongly condemned the attack on Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai, terming it an “assault not just on him, but on our Constitution as well.”
The incident occurred during a Supreme Court proceeding when a lawyer today attempted to throw a shoe at CJI Gavai, shouting “Sanatan ka apmaan nahi sahenge” (we will not tolerate insult of Sanatan Dharma).

“No words are adequate to condemn the attack on the Honourable Chief Justice of India in the Supreme Court itself,” Sonia Gandhi said in a statement. She further asserted: “It is an assault not just on him, but on our Constitution as well.”
“Chief Justice Gavai has been very gracious but the nation must stand in solidarity with him unitedly with a deep sense of anguish and outrage,” she urged.
A 71-year-old lawyer, Rakesh Kishore, allegedly attempted to throw a shoe at CJI Gavai during a court proceeding. Security personnel swiftly intervened, and the courtroom was cleared of disruption. Despite the provocation, CJI Gavai remained composed, urging the court not to be distracted.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge describing it as an “attack on the judiciary and rule of law.” The Bar Council of India has suspended the lawyer’s license, and a show-cause notice has been issued, requiring him to respond within 15 days
