Shama Mohammed, spokesperson of the All India Congress Committee, on Friday expressed dissatisfaction over the low representation of women in the party’s candidate list for the upcoming Assembly elections in Kerala.

Taking to the social media platform X, she urged Rahul Gandhi to intervene and address the issue. Highlighting the gender disparity, she pointed out that out of 92 seats being contested by the Congress, only nine tickets have been allotted to women candidates.

She also referred to the party’s performance during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, noting that only one woman candidate was fielded out of 16 seats contested in Kerala.

In her post, she wrote: “Denied but not defeated. I respectfully urge my leader Rahul Gandhi ji… to help the Congress women of Kerala. Out of the 92 tickets, only 9 tickets were given to women… Very, very sad.”

Shama Mohammed’s remarks came a day after the Congress finalised its candidates for the Assembly polls. Senior party leader and Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan had on Thursday said that the party had completed the selection process for all 95 seats it is contesting in the state.

The development has once again brought the issue of women’s representation in electoral politics into focus, particularly within major political parties.
