Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal passed away on Friday after a prolonged illness. He was 81.

Jaiswal, a three-time Member of Parliament from the Kanpur Lok Sabha constituency, had been battling multiple health complications for an extended period.

According to family members, his condition deteriorated sharply earlier in the day. He was first taken to a nursing home in Kidwai Nagar and later referred to the Cardiology Hospital in Kanpur, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

His mortal remains have been brought to his residence in Lal Bangla, Pokharpur.

The news of his demise was confirmed by Kanpur Congress leaders Pawan Gupta (city president) and Sandeep Shukla (rural president), who stated that his health had suddenly worsened in the morning, prompting the emergency medical response.

Sriprakash Jaiswal was a prominent figure in the Indian National Congress and held key portfolios in the UPA government. He served as the Minister of State for Home Affairs from 2004 to 2009 and later as the Union Coal Minister from 2009 to 2014.

Known for his administrative acumen and articulate parliamentary presence, he enjoyed wide respect across party lines. He was also the president of UP Congress.

The political fraternity and residents of Kanpur have expressed deep grief at the loss of one of the city’s most influential leaders. Further details regarding the last rites are awaited.
