The incident occurred late Saturday night at the Pirumadara area of Ramnagar block in Nainital Uttarakhand. According to locals, the ill fated Innova car UP61BQ1253 being driven by the Vikas Chandra himself hit a road divider and overturned multiple times leaving both in critical conditions.

The locals said the main cause of the accident was poor visibility due to the absence of the street lights at several places which resulted in the SDM losing control over the steering and the car ramming into the divider. The vehicle was severely damaged in the crash.

The SDM and his wife were the only occupants of the car at the time of the accident. They were on a visit to Ramnagar for the weekend.

As the accident occurred local public immediately alerted the police and an ambulance was called in. The couple was rushed to the nearby Neeb Karori Hospital in Pirumadara for first aid. However, in view of their critical condition, doctors referred the victims to a higher-level medical facility in Moradabad.

According to Dr Siddharth Sharma of Neeb Karori Hospital, the accident victims were brought in serious condition. The couple was moved to a better-equipped hospital considering their condition.

Meanwhile, the Nainital Police said they were investigating the matter but preliminary reports suggest that the SDM lost control over the vehicle after it hit the divider at Pirumadara. They said they are trying to ascertain the cause of the accident.
