Rohtak ASI found dead; leaves ‘video’, ‘3-page note’ accusing late IPS Y Puran Kumar of graft

An assistant sub-inspector of the Haryana Police posted in Rohtak was found dead on Tuesday, who left behind a ‘three-page note’ and a six-minute ‘video’ in which he alleged corruption by the late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, police and media reports said.

The authenticity of the video and the three-page note is yet to be established by the police.

The incident comes days after Kumar himself was found dead at his Chandigarh residence, adding a fresh and volatile twist to the ongoing probe.

The deceased has been identified as ASI Sandeep Kumar, who – according to the Rohtak police – was posted with the Cyber Cell. His body was discovered in a room near an agricultural field on the Ladhaut-Dhamar Road.

Preliminary accounts indicate he died of a gunshot wound and that police recovered both the handwritten note and the video from the scene. Authorities have described the death as an alleged suicide and said a formal investigation, including forensic examination, has been launched.

In the recorded message and the note, Sandeep Kumar reportedly named Y Puran Kumar and described him as a “corrupt cop”, asserting that the IPS officer took his own life fearing exposure of alleged wrongdoing.

It is being said that Sandeep was involved in the arrest earlier this month of a head constable, Sushil Kumar, who was described as a close aide and personal security officer of Y Puran Kumar.

Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, was found dead on October 7 at his residence in Sector 11 here. In his own multi-page note he had alleged mental harassment and caste-based discrimination by senior officials, naming several officers, which has already triggered protests and political reactions in the state.

Haryana Police have said they are treating Sandeep’s death as a suicide while investigating the circumstances. Forensic teams and senior officers have reportedly visited the scene and are examining the video and the handwritten note for authenticity and evidentiary value.

Officials have cautioned that the contents of media-circulated material must be verified in the course of the probe and urged restraint until investigations are complete.
