Abbas Ansari, who recently secured relief from the Allahabad High Court over his disqualification from the Mau assembly seat, may have to return to court to regain his membership.

Ansari, the elder son of late Mukhtar Ansari, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by an MP-MLA court. However, the Allahabad High Court stayed the lower court’s judgment last week.

Despite this, the reinstatement of his assembly membership remains uncertain, as the seat was officially declared vacant following his disqualification after the conviction in a hate speech case.

According to sources in the Assembly Secretariat, it is unclear whether his membership can be restored in light of the High Court’s order. So far, neither the Assembly Speaker nor the Secretariat has received any representation from Abbas Ansari seeking restoration.

“Even if such a representation is made, the matter is no longer within the purview of the Speaker or the Secretariat once the seat has been declared vacant. The Assembly Secretariat will only restore his membership on the basis of a clear order from the court,” the sources said.
