The monsoon session of the Rajasthan assembly, scheduled to commence here on Monday, is likely to be stormy.

Although the session will open on Monday, it will be a brief affair tomorrow as it is restricted to mandatory tabling of certain departmental reports, orders and notifications and making the obituary references for paying tributes to dignitaries who passed away since the end of the budget session in March 2025.

Tuesday will be a holiday on account of Ramdev Jayanti. Therefore, actual proceedings in the House will begin on Wednesday (September 3).

However, the ruling BJP’s floor managers have already taken up the task of evolving effective strategy to conduct the house proceedings in a smooth and amicable manner.

To finalising the agenda of the government and discuss the draft/contents of the proposed Bills, a series of parleys-meetings were held here on Sunday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma.

In the afternoon, Sharma chaired a cabinet meeting at the CMO to chalk out an on-the-floor strategy for the session and also to finalise the draft of bills to be introduced in the session.

The draft of the revised Anti Conversion Bill was also finalised for introducing afresh in the house. This Bill was introduced in the last budget session of the House.

However, a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) delegation later had met Chief Minister Sharma to submit representation for making more stringent various provisions of the proposed law, against forcible conversion and so called love jihad.

Soon after the cabinet meeting, the Council of Ministers also sat for being taken in confidence over contentious issues. Late in the evening, the BJP legislature party also met at the CM residence to gear up party MLAs for discharging their responsibility on the floor of the house and also respond appropriately to the Opposition’s moves.

In contrast, the main Opposition Congress appeared to be a bit relaxed. However, the grand old party has made it clear about its moves by skipping the all-party meeting convened by Speaker Vasudev Devnani on August 28.

Both Speaker Devnani and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Joga Ram Patel have taken a serious exception to the Congress move of staying away from the meeting. However, the Opposition party leaders have been gearing up to “bring to the docks the Govt for misgovernance on various issues including state of law and order, disaster management flood relief and rescue operations, school ceiling collapses and court verdict in the SI Recruitment Exam 2021”.

“We will put a halt on the government to prevent them from escaping away from the responsibility and accountability on the government’s failures,” a senior Congress member said.

The session is likely to be brief as it is expected to last for 10-12 sittings.

The Budget Session of the Assembly was held between January 31 and March 24.
