Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday strongly condemned the Delhi Police’s lathi charge on Staff Selection Commission aspirants and teachers who were protesting at Ramlila Maidan against alleged irregularities in government exams and recruitments.
Taking serious exception to the lathi charge, Rahul Gandhi described the police action as “brutal” and “shameful,” stating that it was the “hallmark of a cowardly government.” He accused the Modi government of disregarding the youth’s future, alleging that they came to power through stolen votes.

“This government didn’t come to power on the votes of the people, but by stealing votes,” he said. “First, they’ll steal votes, then they’ll steal exams, then they’ll steal jobs, then they’ll crush both your rights and your voice,” Rahul Gandhi alleged.
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also reacted sharply to the incident, calling the use of police force “inhuman and shameful.” She alleged rampant corruption in recruitment processes and examinations under the BJP rule, which she believed was ruining the future of the youth. “Instead of fixing it and listening to the youth, raining lathis on them is unfortunate. Instead of being cruel to the students, their concerns should be heard,” she said.
The protest at Ramlila Maidan saw thousands of SSC aspirants gather to demand justice over alleged exam paper leaks and recruitment irregularities. Despite initial peaceful protests, the situation escalated after around 100 protesters refused to leave the premises, resulting in a standoff with the police. The police resorted to a lathi charge, leading to several injuries and the detention of at least 44 protesters.
Rahul Gandhi urged the youth to stand firm and fight back against the government’s actions. “Now is the time—not to fear, but to stand firm and fight back,” he said, alleging that the demands of the youth, farmers, and minorities will never be a priority for the government.
