Amid tensions over the controversial Citizenship Act, Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi were stopped from entering Meerut by the UP police on Tuesday.

Meerut witnessed some of the worst incidents of violence during protests against the amended citizenship law and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Around six people were killed in protests.

After being denied entry, the two leaders have left for Delhi.

Speaking to reporters, Rahul Gandhi said: “We asked the police if they have any order, they didn’t show us any order but they told us to go back.”

It is learnt that although the Congress leaders had offered to travel in a group of three people, they were still stopped.

The Uttar Pradesh Police has only accepted that firing took place in Bijnor. But video clips that have surfaced suggest firing took place at many places in the state.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had last Sunday visited the families of two persons who died in recent violence over CAA in UP’s Bijnor.

Sixteen people have been reportedly killed in anti-CAA protests in the state. Bijnor was one of the districts in the state which was affected due to the violence as protesters hurled stones and brickbats at the police during the protests as well as torched some vehicles.

On Monday, Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that “the whole nation recognised the Prime Minister by his clothes as he wears Rs 2 crore suit”, in an apparent reference to Modi who had said that those agitating against the CAA were recognisable by their clothes.
