Amid protest by some with the slogan “Go back Rahul”, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra-led by former Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi received a grand welcome in his erstwhile parliamentary constituency on Monday.

During his road show, the Congress leader faced protest near Gandhi Chowk in Amethi and Musafirkhana turn in Gauriganj by people who were expressing their displeasure towards him.

Later, the police arrived to bring the situation under control.

This is the first time Rahul visited Amethi in two years. He conducted a 35-kilometer roadshow which he covered in 90 minutes in an open jeep.

Interestingly, incumbent Amethi MP and Union Minister Smriti Irani was also present in the area over developmental programmes.

Addressing roadside meetings, Rahul Gandhi announced that if Congress government comes to power at the Centre, Congress would give MSP to the farmers with legal guarantee and conduct caste census.

He said the agitating farmers want to go to Delhi but they are being stopped. The farmers are demanding minimum support price (MSP) but the government is not listening.

“Today, I saw a photo of the farmers feeding the policemen and the policemen are stopping the farmers. What are the farmers demanding? Farmers are saying give us MSP. What is the big deal? Congress party will give MSP to farmers with legal guarantee,” he said.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who joined the Yatra here, attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling him the leader of liars.

Kharge said, “Under the Congress government, schemes worth thousands of crores came here (Amethi) but most of the schemes remained stuck. I ask why the schemes brought during the UPA government are closed today, because they (the BJP) do not want to work in Rae Bareli and Amethi of Uttar Pradesh. They are conspiring to create enmity.”

After a nightlong stay, the yatra will reach Rae Bareli tomorrow.
