“The suicide of Haryana’s IPS officer Y Puran Kumar ji is a symbol of that deepening social poison which is crushing humanity in the name of caste,” Gandhi stated on handle X, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

“When an IPS officer has to endure humiliation and oppression because of his caste – then imagine, in what conditions an ordinary Dalit citizen must be living,” he added, highlighting the struggles faced by marginalized communities.
Gandhi pointed to recent incidents of injustice, including the murder of Hariom Valmiki in Raebareli and the alleged insult to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, as evidence of the growing intolerance and hatred towards the vulnerable. “These incidents show that injustice against the deprived classes has reached its peak,” he asserted.
The Congress leader stressed that the struggle for justice and equality is not limited to individuals like Y Puran Kumar but is a fundamental right that every Indian citizen deserves. “The hatred and Manuvadi ideology of BJP-RSS have filled society with venom,” Gandhi alleged, adding that “Dalits, tribals, backward classes, and Muslims are gradually losing hope for justice.”
Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, was found dead with a gunshot wound at his Chandigarh residence on October 7. A nine-page suicide note reportedly recovered from the scene accused several senior police officers of caste-based discrimination and harassment. Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, has filed a police complaint against the officers named in the note, accusing them of abetment to suicide.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, with many calling for a thorough investigation and action against those responsible.
