The district administration of Jaisalmer has promulgated prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS as a precautionary measure in Basanpeer village, where the situation remains tense but peaceful following a dispute over canopy construction.

The administration has banned the assembly of five or more persons, as well as rallies, processions, marches, and the carrying of weapons in public.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Saksham Goyal enforced the prohibitory orders on Wednesday morning, anticipating tension ahead of the scheduled visit of former Union Minister Kailash Choudhary to the village later in the day.

Former MP and sitting Congress MLA Harish Chaudhary is also scheduled to visit the troubled village on July 19.

The authorities apprehend fresh trouble following the visits of political leaders from different parties, which could incite unrest and aggravate the otherwise peaceful situation.

The renovation of dilapidated ancient canopies (memorials) on the outskirts of the village is said to be the bone of contention between the two communities. It is alleged that these structures were damaged by miscreants.

Conceding to the long-standing demand for the revival and renovation of these old canopies, the administration granted permission for their repair.

Trouble erupted on July 10 when a group from the rival community opposed the revival work on the canopies of Jhujhar Ram Chandra Singh Sodha and Jhujhar Paliwal Ji. The protesters resorted to stone-pelting and vandalism, damaging several vehicles and injuring four constables along with some villagers.

The police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the mob. Several villagers, including some women, were taken into custody.

The situation in the village is now tense but peaceful.
