Youth Congress activists were on Friday stopped from proceeding towards the BJP office here against the “undemocratic” arrest of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) national president Uday Bhanu Chib and other leaders in connection with the shirtless protest at the recent India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.

A large number of Youth Congress activists, led by general secretary Anirudh Sawhney, marched towards the BJP office but were stopped by police at Trikuta Nagar and not allowed to proceed.

Party workers alleged that the police took their leaders, including IYC secretary incharge J&K Maan Singh Rathore, JKPYC general secretary Anirudh Sawhney, chairman sports cell Ranjodh Singh, secretary Dr Suhaib Manhas, secretary Anmol Kohli and others to the police station in a bid to thwart the march.

The protesters were carrying placards and were also raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.

Rathore strongly criticised the arrest of Uday Bhanu Chib and other leaders in New Delhi, terming it a direct assault on democratic values. He stated that the Youth Congress had exercised its constitutional right to hold a peaceful demonstration, and the subsequent arrests reflected the Centre’s intolerance towards dissent.

JKPYC general secretary Anirudh Sawhney, while condemning the police action, said that the Youth Congress had planned a peaceful march to register their protest democratically, but the administration responded by deploying a heavy police force to block their path.
