A team of the Madhya Pradesh Police on Monday arrested the main accused, Vinod Kori, who had allegedly crushed a forest guard under the wheel while driving a tractor-trolley involved in illegal sand mining in Morena, Madhya Pradesh from Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Police officials said a reward of Rs 10,000 had been announced for the absconding accused, while two others involved in the same case have already been arrested.

On April 8, the tractor-trolley involved in illegal sand mining and driven by Kori crushed 35-year-old forest guard Harkesh Gurjar while he tried to stop it for checking on a road, killing him on the spot.

Morena’s Additional Superintendent of Police Surendra Singh Dawar said after carrying out raids in cities of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi, the police finally found a clue to the accused driver in Ahmedabad this morning.

“He has been arrested,” said the ASP.

The police had earlier arrested another accused Pawan Tomar late Sunday evening, while his accomplice, Sonu Chauhan, was arrested two days ago.

Chauhan is an office bearer of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Dimni Mandal, while Tomar is the vice-president of the BJP’s Mandal unit in Dimni.

The police action came at a time when the Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a petition related to the murder.

The matter was raised before a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, which is hearing a suo motu case titled ‘Illegal Sand Mining in the National Chambal Sanctuary and Threat to Endangered Aquatic Wildlife’.

According to the lawyer who mentioned the matter before the bench, the petition was filed by an amicus curiae appointed by the Supreme Court in the pending suo motu case related to illegal sand mining in the National Chambal Sanctuary.

Meanwhile, BJP Morena District Vice President Arvind Singh acknowledged that two of the accused are party officials. He, however, said the party will decide on the action against them after the investigation report regarding their involvement is received.
