Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Sunday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s planned visit to Manipur on September 13, calling it a “non-visit” due to its brevity. According to Ramesh, the Prime Minister will spend only three hours in the state, which he believes is an insult to the people of Manipur who have waited 29 months for his visit.
“The proposed visit of the Prime Minister to Manipur on Sept 13 is being hailed by his cheerleaders. But it appears that he will be spending just about 3 hours–yes, just 3 hours–in the state. What does he hope to accomplish by such a rushed trip? This is actually an insult to the people of the state who have waited for him for 29 long and agonizing months,” Ramesh said.

The visit comes amid ongoing tensions in Manipur, where ethnic violence broke out in May 2023. The state has seen hundreds of deaths and over 60,000 people displaced, with many still living in relief camps.
Ramesh has been vocal about the government’s response to the crisis, questioning the delay in imposing President’s rule and criticising Home Minister Amit Shah for not speaking about the situation in Manipur during parliamentary discussions.
Ramesh’s criticism highlights the growing discontent among politicians and the public regarding the government’s handling of the Manipur crisis. The brief visit has sparked concerns about the Prime Minister’s commitment to addressing the state’s issues and providing support to its people.
