“With unprecedented efforts from the government, our humble postman has become the harbinger of financial inclusion. With @IndiaPostOffice and @IPPBOnline, India’s postal system is now the world’s largest doorstep banking network, ensuring dignity and empowerment,” Modi said.
Through the extensive postal network, IPPB has enabled doorstep banking services for millions, particularly benefitting senior citizens, differently-abled individuals, and residents of rural and underserved areas.
India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) plays a pivotal role in advancing financial inclusion across India, particularly in remote and underserved areas. By bringing banking services to the doorstep of every citizen, IPPB effectively bridges the gap between urban and rural India, supporting the government’s broader financial inclusion objectives.
The initiative complements flagship government schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), which have expanded banking access and facilitated direct subsidy transfers. These measures have collectively boosted economic growth, reduced poverty, and improved citizens’ well-being.
PM Modi was highlighting the achievements of the country’s postal system in the backdrop of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia’s article emphasizing India’s rapid progress in telecommunications, with 5G services reaching 82% of the population within 22 months and the country actively shaping 6G regulations.
Launched on September 1, 2018, IPPB operates under the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, and aims to provide accessible, affordable, and reliable banking to every Indian. By leveraging over 1.5 lakh post offices and lakhs of postal employees, it supports the government’s mission of ensuring last-mile financial inclusion.
