The Anti-corruption Vigilance Wing of the Odisha Police on Tuesday arrested a divisional forest officer for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets to the tune of 218% more than his known sources of income.

The Anti-corruption Vigilance Wing of the Odisha Police on Tuesday arrested a divisional forest officer for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets to the tune of 218% more than his known sources of income.

The forest officer posted at the Keonjhar district had amassed 115 plots in his and his family member’s name over a period of two decades, which is stated to be highest ever by a government functionary.

Nityananda Nayak, Divisional Forest Officer, Kendu Leaf Division, Keonjhar, was arrested by the Odisha Vigilance and forwarded to the Court of Special Judge, Vigilance, Keonjhar for possession of disproportionate assets (DA), which he could not account for satisfactorily.

Cases under relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act were registered against Nayak and his spouse, the Vigilance said in a statement.

During house searches, movable and immovable assets worth crores of rupees were unearthed in the name of Nayak and his family members. These included a four storeyed building with area approximately 9000 Square feet at Angul, 123 valuable plots, a farm house of around 1.5 acre area, Rs 10.25 lakh cash, Gold ornaments weighing 200 grams, Bank and Insurance deposits worth Rs.50.38 lakh, household articles worth around Rs.23.80 lakh.

After thorough search, inventory and further enquiry, the income, expenditure and assets of the arrested forest officer were calculated and he was found in possession of disproportionate assets which were 218% in excess of his known sources of income.
