The Odisha Police on Tuesday ‘arrested’ a Panamanian cargo ship Magnet Team at Paradip Port after the Orissa High Court adjudicating an admiralty suit had ordered the foreign vessel’s arrest over unpaid maintenance dues amounting to Rs 2.11 crore.

“We hereby command you to arrest the Vessel MV MAGNET TEAM (IMO 9233507) of the Paradip Port in the district of Jagatsinghpur and to keep the same under safe arrest, until you shall receive further orders from us,” the high court had ruled in an order on Monday.

The court order had come in the wake of an admiralty suit filed by Silk Road Shipping and Chartering Limited, Cuttack seeking judicial action against the ship for nonpayment of outstanding dues.

The admiralty suit relates to the violation of the terms of the Charter which is covered under Section 4(1)(h) of the Admiralty (Jurisdiction and Settlement of Maritime Claims) Act, 2017.

Abiding by the high court order, the court at Kujang issued an arrest warrant against the ship. Police accordingly ‘arrested’ the ship in the presence of an executive magistrate. The port will provide security for the safety of the ship, said the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) , Paradip, Smurti Ranjan Kar.
