Police used force to disperse the National Students Union of India (NSUI) activists demonstrating at the Gate of the Rajasthan University here on Friday in protest against the authorities for allowing an event with the alleged “motive of encouraging RSS ideology”.

The protesting students, opposing the holding of a woman empowerment centric seminar under the aegis of the Marudhara Nari Sangthan, held demonstrations, raised slogans against the RSS and the university administration.

The police completely barricaded the venue in the campus while the agitated protesters attempted to scale and cross over the barricades to enter. In their bid they have multiple face-offs with the cops deployed there.

The police used force to disperse them. A number of protesting youths were arrested and taken away in police vehicles.

Senior Congress leader and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot condemned the “propagation of RSS ideology” in the varsity and the bid of weakening autonomy of the universities and other academic bodies. He said “peaceful demonstration by the NSUI was aimed at defending the democratic values. Arrest of the protesting students showed a dictatorial mindset of the authorities.

Congress state chief Govind Singh Dotasra also condemned ‘lathi charge” on students and arrests of the agitators and their leaders.

Gehlot and Dotasra demanded immediate release of the arrested students.
