The National Conference (NC) has engaged former Solicitor General of India, Gopal Subramaniam, to intervene on behalf of the party in the hearing of Article 35A in the Supreme Court on 27 August.

Farooq Abdullah, National Conference president and Member of Parliament for Srinagar, held detailed discussions with senior lawyers in Delhi in the context of petitions challenging the State’s special status in the Supreme Court.

Abdullah said the party was committed to defend the State’s special status at every juncture and would fight the battle to uphold the State’s political identity and rights at all costs.

The 80-year-old former Chief Minister of J&K was accompanied by NC Provincial Presidents Nasir Aslam Wani and Devender Singh Rana during the meetings.

The Kashmir based Hurriyat leadership, including Syed Alishah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik, have called for two days shutdown in J&K on 26 and 27 August against any attempt of tinkering of the Article 35A.

Meanwhile, the civil society and various political parties have demanded that the Article 35A and the constitutional provisions granting special status to J&K should be scrapped as these encourage separatist tendencies.
