In a surprise development amid the Opposition Congress aggressively targeting the ruling BJP during the ongoing Budget session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Deputy Leader of Opposition Hemant Katare resigned from his post on Friday evening.

In his resignation, Katare cited his inability to devote sufficient time to his constituency, Ater in Bhind district, as well as his family commitments.

According to party sources quoting organisational general secretary Sanjay Kamble, Katare submitted his resignation to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee chief Jitu Patwari, and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar.

Sources said Kamble clarified that the resignation pertains only to the organisational post and not to Katare’s membership in the party.

“Katare was, is, and will continue to remain with the Congress party with full commitment,” Kamble said.

He added that the party leadership is likely to ask Katare to continue in the position and that his resignation may be declined.

The final decision on whether to accept or reject Katare’s resignation rests with the state Congress president and the party’s central leadership.
