The Madhya Pradesh BJP Government on Saturday banned the sale of ‘Coldrif’ cough syrup across the state with immediate effect, following the deaths of at least nine kids in Chhindwara district due to kidney failure, suspected to have been caused by the consumption of this syrup.

The Tamil Nadu government has already banned the ‘Coldrif’ cough syrup on Friday, after the national outrage over the nine deaths in MP, and three in neighbouring Rajasthan due to similar kidney infections.

Various teams of the NCDC, ICMR, state health department, and food and drug control department are also conducting separate investigations into the deaths of the children.

Samples taken from kids still admitted in hospitals have been sent to the Virology Institute of Pune. Samples of the cough syrup are also being tested for adulteration and contamination.

On Friday, former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and Chhindwara MLA Kamal Nath had alleged that ‘brake oil solvent’, a highly toxic substance, was mixed in the adulterated cough syrup, which is suspected to be the cause of kidney failure and subsequent deaths of nine kids in the district in 26 days, from 7 September to 2 October.
