Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday said the state has emerged as the second fastest-growing economy in India, registering an average growth rate of 10 percent over the past three years.
He made the announcement while inaugurating the Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School at Umsohpieng, an event attended by government officials, community leaders, students, and other dignitaries.

Highlighting the state’s steady economic momentum, Sangma credited the government’s emphasis on welfare, infrastructure, education, and human resource development.
He said Rs 3,654 crore has been earmarked for the education sector alone—covering grants-in-aid, infrastructure enhancement, and institutional strengthening.
The chief minister underlined his government’s reform-oriented approach, particularly in introducing a structured salary system for ad hoc and SSA teachers, which he described as a step toward building a resilient educational foundation for the next two decades.
Encouraging parents, teachers, and local communities to play an active role in guiding the younger generation, Sangma said, “Education must go hand in hand with opportunities in sports, music, entrepreneurship, and social work. Our youth must be empowered to dream and build.”
To promote music education, Sangma announced that the Chief Minister’s Special Grant Fund would provide musical instruments to students of Nongkharai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School and Sijun Memorial School, noting that music fosters creativity and cognitive development among children.
