As the 2025 G20 Summit unfolds in South Africa, global leaders are focusing on four major priorities that aim to shape the future of sustainable development and economic resilience. Sudhakar Dalela, India’s Secretary (Economic Relations) and the Ministry of External Affairs’ lead for G20 affairs, has outlined these priorities at a press briefing on Saturday.
Speaking to reporters, Dalela highlighted that the summit is working around the central themes of solidarity, equality, and sustainability. “The G20 this year has sent a strong message on four main priorities identified by the South African presidency,” he said.

These include strengthening disaster resilience and response, ensuring debt sustainability for low-income countries, leveraging critical minerals for sustainable economic growth, and mobilising finance to support a just energy transition.
Dalela explained that these priorities reflect not only global concerns but also the specific interests of Africa.
“There was a clear focus on the issues and priorities of Africa, which are reflected in the Leaders’ Declaration adopted by all member countries during the summit today,” he said. He added that initiatives launched during India’s G20 presidency continue to evolve, gain momentum, and yield tangible outcomes across the forum, a process that South Africa has carried forward with renewed energy.
The summit brings together leaders from the world’s largest economies to discuss some of the pressing global challenges. These range from financial stability and economic growth to sustainable development and climate action.
Looking ahead, the summit’s agenda remains packed. Dalela said a third session of the summit is taking place on Sunday, during which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is addressing the gathering. In addition, a trilateral meeting between the leaders of India, Brazil, and South Africa is taking place on the sidelines of the summit, providing a platform for focused discussions on regional and global priorities.
“The momentum from India’s presidency is continuing to bear fruit,” Dalela noted, “It is encouraging to see initiatives and outcomes that were in place during our presidency further advanced by our South African colleagues.”
Experts believe that the summit’s focus on disaster resilience and debt sustainability is particularly timely, given the recent increase in natural disasters and economic challenges faced by low-income countries. Similarly discussions on critical minerals and the energy transition could have long-term implications for global economic growth and environmental sustainability.
The G20 Summit 2025 runs through November 23.
