Mathura gears up for Shri Krishna Janmashtami: 5 million devotees expected

Preparations are in full swing for the Braj region’s grandest religious celebration — Shri Krishna Janmashtami on August 16. This year marks the 5,252nd birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, and Mathura is brimming with devotion and excitement.

According to the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, the city alone is expected to welcome over 5 million devotees during the festivities. With massive footfall anticipated, elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure safety, comfort, and a seamless experience for visitors. Across the city, small and large stages have been set up where nearly 1,000 artists will present vibrant cultural performances.

UP Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh shared that Mathura and Vrindavan will host three days of grand Shobha Yatras, from main roads to narrow lanes, immersing visitors in the spiritual and cultural essence of Braj. From August 15 to 17, coinciding with a three-day holiday, pilgrims and tourists from across India and abroad are arriving in large numbers. Through traditional tableaux, cultural programs, and interactive activities, the celebrations will bring alive the life and divine plays of Lord Krishna.

Wide-scale preparations have been made in Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, Barsana, and Gokul. “Our aim is to ensure that every visitor returns with a heart full of devotion, joy, and an unforgettable spiritual experience,” Singh said. “Braj’s rich heritage must reach every corner of the world.”

The minister further highlighted the festive fervor across Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, Nandgaon, and Govardhan. Streets of Mathura are being adorned with tableaux of Krishna’s childhood pastimes, while temples are being decorated with flowers, façade lighting, rangoli, and oil lamps. On August 15, Independence Day will be marked with a grand Shobha Yatra from Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, followed by a series of devotional processions across Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana, Nandgaon, and Govardhan, creating an atmosphere of pure devotion.

The celebrations will feature performances by folk artists from Braj, Bundelkhand, Rajasthan, and Haryana. Visitors can enjoy traditional dance forms like Rai, Kachhi Ghodi, and Gujri, while bhajan troupes from ISKCON and Barsana’s Radha Rani Temple will fill the evenings with devotional music.
