Barely a day after President Ram Nath Kovind signed the Triple Talaq Bill and made the practice a criminal offence, a man in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh divorced his wife after pronouncing triple talaq on road.

The man, as seen in a viral video, got into an altercation with his wife and was seen fighting with his wife’s brother. The video of the incident is doing rounds on social media while the details of the reason behind the argument are still not known.

In the purported video, the woman was heard saying that she had approached the police earlier and complained about her husband.

The UP Police in the matter has said that they were trying to ascertain the identity of the couple and the veracity of the video as well.

Earlier, the Lower and Upper House passed the controversial Triple Talaq Bill and made the practice of instant triple talaq a criminal offence.

The Triple Talaq Bill or Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 was passed in one go in the Lok Sabha with 303 votes in favour on July 25, amid an outcry by the Opposition for the bill’s scrutiny by a Standing Committee.

The Triple Talaq Bill has faced challenges in the Rajya Sabha earlier, where the BJP-led NDA does not have a majority. However, the number game favoured the saffron party and it got the bill passed with a final result of a 99-84 score on July 30.

Favouring the permutation and combination, BJP’s NDA allies AIADMK and JD(U) staged a walkout while the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) abstained from voting. From the opposition, NCP’s Sharad Pawar, Praful Patel, four Congress MPs and two from the Samajwadi Party (SP) did not turn up for the voting.

After the passing of the bill in Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad had said, “Today is a historic day. Both the Houses have given justice to Muslim women. This is the beginning of a transforming India.”
