TMC accuses BJP of turning EC into party office, demands SC-monitored LS polls
TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien accused the ruling party of manipulating the electoral landscape ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged that the Central government was “forcefully” passing bill taking advantage of its majority in Parliament. The Trinamool Congress supremo expressed concern over the future of parliamentary democracy.
Speaking to reporters after a strategic meeting with her party’s MPs, Banerjee also alleged that there are at least 16 Bills which are related to the affairs of the states and should be considered and passed in the winter session of Parliament.
She told reporters, “You have seen that if the Opposition raises its voice, due to the majority, the ruling party gets the bill passed without any voting. They also do not accept the reports of Standing Committees or the Select Committees. We are apprehensive whether our parliamentary democracy will be able to maintain its dignity and respect, which has been preserved to date.

Banerjee said in a democracy, there are various political parties, and many ideologies, but the parliamentary majority is always victorious.
“But this does not mean that you will suppress the voice of the Opposition, the states and the media,” she said.
On Monday, Banerjee attended a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on preparations for the G20 and on Tuesday she visited Ajmer Sharif Dargah along with her nephew and party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
The winter session of Parliament began on Wednesday and will continue till December 29. The session is likely to have 17 sittings over 23 days.
