A massive fire broke out on Sunday afternoon at a makeshift firecracker market set up on the MG College grounds in Fatehpur, reducing more than 70 shops to ashes and destroying over 50 two-wheelers parked nearby.
The incident occurred at around 12:45 pm causing widespread panic in the area. Eyewitnesses reported that the blaze began due to a suspected short circuit in one of the shops and quickly spread to other stalls, many of which were stocked with firecrackers. The intense heat and frequent explosions made it difficult to control the fire initially.
The explosions continued to be heard for nearly an hour after the fire started. Thick black smoke was visible from up to two kilometers away as flames engulfed the entire market within 15–20 minutes. As the fire intensified, chaos erupted, with people running for safety. Over six people reportedly sustained burn injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported.
Chief Fire Officer Jaiveer Singh confirmed that approximately 65 to 70 shops were completely destroyed along with more than 30 motorcycles and scooters. Fire brigade teams were immediately deployed to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control using water tankers, buckets, and even sand in the absence of nearby hydrants.
Local police and administrative officials also reached the spot and have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. Officials are now assessing the damage and ensuring the injured receive proper medical care.
