Popular folk singer Maithili Thakur, known for her renditions of traditional songs, has officially announced that she will enter politics. Maithili revealed that she is ready to contest elections from Darbhanga or Madhubani, her home region in Bihar.
The 25-year-old singer said she wants to serve her people while continuing her music career. “Music and public service will go hand in hand,” she said. “Prabhu seva (service to God) and jan seva (service to people) are both equally important to me. Contesting elections doesn’t mean I will give up my music. I will keep singing for the people.”

Hint toward BJP ticket
Maithili has hinted strongly toward the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Without naming it directly, she said, “There is one party whose ideology matches mine. You must have seen my songs and my devotion to Sanatan Dharma. You can understand which direction I am inclined toward. The announcement will be made in a couple of days.”
She added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a big influence on her. “I have always been inspired by Modiji. Watching his dedication and love for the country motivated me to take this step into politics,” she said.
She added that during her recent meetings with BJP leaders, they discussed Bihar’s future and how she could contribute. “If I get the opportunity, I’ll work for the development of my state and my region,” she said confidently.
Speculation about Maithili’s political debut began after she met BJP’s national general secretary Vinod Tawde and Union Minister Nityanand Rai.
According to political experts, if Maithili officially joins the BJP and contests from her home region, she could significantly strengthen the party’s cultural and emotional connection with the people of Mithila.
Maithili confirmed that she has been living in Delhi for work but wishes to move back to her village if she gets a ticket. “I want to live among my people. As soon as the announcement is made, I’ll pack my bags and leave for home,” she said.
Respect for Nitish Kumar, subtle dig at RJD
In her recent statements, Maithili praised Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, saying, “The people of Bihar like Nitish Kumar a lot. Many positive changes have happened during his time.” She even called him her favourite leader.
At the same time, she took a subtle dig at former Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav’s rule, saying, “I’ve heard from my elders what the situation was like during those earlier years.”
Maithili was born in Benipatti, a town in Madhubani district of Bihar. Her father, Ramesh Thakur, is a music teacher and folk singer, while her mother Bharti Thakur has always supported her musical dreams.
Currently, the Benipatti seat is represented by BJP’s senior leader and former minister Vinod Narayan Jha, who won the 2020 election by a margin of over 30,000 votes.
The Election Commission has announced that Bihar Assembly elections will take place in two phases on November 6 and November 11, with counting of votes on November 14.
Maithili’s journey from music to politics
Maithili Thakur began her musical journey at the age of 11 and soon became a household name across India for her powerful voice and classical training. She has been a strong promoter of Indian folk music and culture, especially in the Maithili language.
Earlier this year, she received praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for her rendition of a devotional song about Maa Shabri during the Ayodhya Ram Temple inauguration. Sharing her song on social media, PM Modi wrote, “The occasion of Pran Pratishtha in Ayodhya reminds every Indian of the ideals of Lord Ram. Listen to how Maithili Thakur has beautifully expressed the story of Shabari in her melodious voice.”
